PITTSBURGH — The first two months of the season have revealed, in a painful detail, the weaknesses of the Mets. And the one that continues to repeatedly haunt them is their bullpen.
Many factors have contributed to the current state of the Mets’ relievers, statistically among the worst in baseball: injuries, a lack of depth, and a heavy workload caused by the struggles of the starting rotation.
That stew of misfortunes has been just one of the many reasons that the Mets are 20-27 to start the season. And the bullpen’s shortcomings were on gut-wrenching display in a 5-4 loss in 10 innings to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.
