As the Mets lost their first game of the season Sunday, 5-1 to the Cardinals at Citi Field, their best news came in the travel department: Michael Conforto was heading north.
The center fielder is not eligible to come off the disabled list until Thursday, but he left Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Sunday to join the Mets, the team announced.
Conforto will face rehabbing starter Jason Vargas in a simulated game Monday at Citi Field to get some live at-bats, and manager Mickey Callaway said it was “possible” Conforto could be ready to play by Thursday against the Nationals in Washington.
