Matt Harvey will be designated for assignment by the Mets, the team's GM Sandy Alderson said before Friday's game at Citi Field.
It appears Harvey refusing to be sent to the minor leagues was the last straw for Alderson, who has seven days to either trade Harvey or make him a free agent.
"We feel like we failed Matt Harvey," manager Mickey Callaway said of his work with pitching coach Dave Eiland. "Our job is to help every player in there, and it's not a good feeling when you can't."
Harvey, 29, will be paid roughly $5 million by the Mets the remainder of this season whether he is or isn't on the team.
