Mets manager Terry Collins said Steven Matz threw for the first time Monday since being shut down with a partially torn lat muscle in his left side last month.
Collins said before Monday night's game in Miami that the lefthander played catch from 60 feet in Port St. Lucie.
It is still unclear when Matz might return to the Mets.
"It's going to be a little while," Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said.
Ricco said Matz still has to go through throwing progression before getting back on mound.
Matz, a Ward Melville product, was shut down for a little more than three weeks, which was roughly the original estimate.
