The Mets welcomed Stony Brook's Steven Matz as the sixth starter in their pitching rotation, but as well as he pitched, the more interesting question might be whether he should be third or fourth in their batting lineup.
Matz not only won a 7-2 decision over the Reds, pitching 7 2/3 innings, but he drove in four of those runs with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate for one of baseball's most anemic lineups.
Matz's major-league debut was pushed back to a 4:38 p.m. start on Sunday because Saturday's suspended game required another seven innings before the Mets won a 2-1 decision in the 13th inning.
