Only the Mets could steal the spotlight from the another day filled with Yankees injury woes.
Steven Matz put forth a start of horrors during Tuesday’s game against the Phillies, as the roller-coaster Mets pitcher gave up eight runs, all but two earned, without recording a single out. The line, compounded by a pair of errors from Amed Rosario, shot up Matz’s ERA from 1.65 to 4.96.
Manager Mickey Callaway put Matz out of his misery after 31 pitches, replacing him with reliever Drew Gagnon, but not before the starter became the second Mets’ pitcher to give up eight runs in one inning: Bobby Jones did so against the Braves in September, 1997.
