Mets pitcher Steven Matz lost a no-hitter with one out in the eighth inning against the Padres on Sunday afternoon, falling five outs shy of making history.
Alexei Ramirez lined a single over the first-base bag to break up Matz’s bid.
Matz, who was 1-7 in his previous 13 starts, threw 105 pitches on a 96-degree day at Citi Field. The rookie left-hander struck out eight and walked two. He fanned All-Star slugger Wil Myers all three times.
Padres leadoff man Travis Jankowski, who struggles against left-handed pitching, tried to bunt for a hit with a runner on first and two outs in the sixth.
