The billionaire in line to become the new owner of the Mets inspired Damian Lewis’ foul-mouthed financier character in the Showtime hit “Billions.”
Steve Cohen, a real-life hedge-fund owner, is in negotiations with the Wilpon family to purchase an 80 percent share of the Major League Baseball team — and eventual control of the franchise after five years, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday.
Cohen, the CEO of Point72 Asset Management with an estimated worth of $9.2 billion, is the inspiration for the “Billions” character Bobby Axelrod.
The drama series, now entering its fifth season, focuses on the volatile relationship between Axelrod, played by Lewis, and righteous lawman Chuck Rhoades, played by Paul Giamatti.
