Sandy Alderson takes leave of absence due to health concern

Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson will be taking an immediate leave of absence from the team to do a “recurrence of cancer.” Alderson will not have decision making ability during his leave, and GM duties will be shared by John Ricco. J.P. Riccardi and Omar Minaya.

The 70 year-old Alderson was diagnosed with a treatable, but unknown, form of cancer in December of 2015. Little information was given to the press as to the type of cancer or its prognosis. Alderson said, “my health is an uncertainty going forward. Based on the merits, I’m not sure if coming back is warranted.
