Kansas City Royals infielder Raul Mondesi Jr. has been suspended 50 games without pay Tuesday as a result of a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance.
Mondesi tested positive for Clenbuterol, which violates terms of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. According to multiple reports, Mondesi was originally suspended 80 games, but the ban was reduced after he was able to show the substance came from cold medicine he was taking.
"This is an unfortunate incident that we believe to be an innocent mistake, but these are the consequences that players face when they do not adhere to the policies that have been collectively bargained," Major League Baseball said in a statement.
