MIAMI — Robinson Cano’s penchant for loafing from the batter’s box bit him and the Mets in the backside Friday night.
The veteran second baseman, not knowing the number of outs, jogged from the box on the grounder he hit to pitcher Adam Conley in the seventh inning. So instead of applying pressure on the defense, the Marlins turned an easy 1-6-3 double play to complete the inning.
Cano declined to speak with reporters after the Mets’ 8-6 loss to the Marlins, but through a team spokesman said he trusted the scoreboard at Marlins Park, which showed there were two outs in the inning.
