Hall of Famer, former Met, and all-time professional sports character Rickey Henderson died this week at the age of 65, multiple outlets are reporting. The reported cause of death is pneumonia. Henderson, a first ballot inductee into Cooperstown in 2009, played in parts of 25 seasons, including a year and change spent as a Met in 1999-2000. Known for his flamboyant personality, predilection for speaking in the third person, and his healthy ego, Henderson was one of the most dynamic and memorable players of the late 20th century.
Henderson’s accolades are well known. The greatest leadoff hitter to ever live, Henderson holds the all-time stolen base records both for a single season (130) as well as for a career (1,406).
