It remains to be determined whether it will be too late to salvage the season, but reinforcements are on the way for the Mets.
Seth Lugo, pitching with a partially torn UCL and aiming to avoid Tommy John surgery, will make what is expected to be his final minor league start Friday with Double-A Binghamton. Steven Matz (elbow inflammation) is scheduled to conclude his rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Las Vegas.
Both pitchers are expected to rejoin the Mets rotation next week, pushing Robert Gsellman to the bullpen and potentially displacing rookie Tyler Pill. Lugo and Matz each have spent the season’s opening two months on the disabled list.
