ATLANTA - Terry Collins believes it's part of his managerial duty, especially now that the Mets have turned the race for the NL East into a runaway.
The manager makes the rounds, asking if his regulars might need a breather, a concession to the irrepressible grind of the season. But when he tried the tactic with Yoenis Cespedes, the Mets' most valuable player offered a definitive response.
"Let me see if I can give you the interpreted version: no way in hell do I want a day off," Collins said before Saturday's game against the Braves. "I think [that] is how it was interpreted.
