Rare Homer by Juan Lagares Leads Mets to Win Over the Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — A backhand stop at short, a quick turn at second and an impressive stretch by the first baseman Lucas Duda enabled the Mets to turn a clutch double play in the eighth inning Saturday night and preserve a narrow 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, and the Mets needed three relievers to record the final two outs. But Buddy Carlyle got it with one pitch, inducing catcher Carlos Ruiz to ground to the shortstop Ruben Tejada, initiating the 6-4-3 double play that stopped the Phillies’ rally in its tracks.
