Phillies emerge as frontrunner in packed Zack Wheeler sweepstakes

The Mets could be seeing a lot of Zack Wheeler this season, just not in a blue and orange cap.

ESPN.com reported on Wednesday the Phillies are now seen as the most potent bidders for the 29-year-old starter. That comes a day after MLB Network reported that the ex-Met was a top priority for the White Sox. Wheeler is also drawing interest from the Twins, Rangers, Reds, Astros and Blue Jays.

Wheeler has emerged as a second-tier favorite among teams staying away from the bidding wars for Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg. Two industry sources told The Post’s Joel Sherman and Ken Davidoff that Wheeler would likely decide on his future no later than the end of next week’s winter meetings.
