WASHINGTON — Pete Alonso is making this fun. And he’s already got the perfect nickname.
“Pete the Polar Bear,’’ Noah Syndergaard said after the Mets’ 11-8 win over the Nationals on Saturday at Nationals Park. “He’s a violent creature.’’
“I’ll embrace it,’’ Alonso said of the nickname.
Why not? Alonso went toe-to-toe on Saturday against the Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg and their highly-touted rookie center fielder Victor Robles. Keep this up and Alonso could be in the Rookie of the Year race with Robles and perhaps the Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr.
With his family in the stands, Alonso showed off all parts of his game — getting on base four times, crushing two bullet RBI doubles, scoring the first run of the game with some crafty first-inning base-running and also making three excellent plays at first base.
