LOS ANGELES — Pete Alonso still meticulously records his at-bats in a notebook after every game for the simple reason he tends to remember information better when he handwrites it instead of typing on a keyboard.
The Mets rookie entered Monday in something of a slump for May, hitting only .192 for the month, but that fact has largely been disguised by his power production. Alonso had eight homers for the month, including three during the team’s 6-1 homestand, to help propel an inconsistent lineup. His 17 homers overall were tops among major league rookies.
Alonso is on pace to surpass 50 homers for the season, a plateau that has never been reached by a Mets player.
