Pete Alonso gets his second chance with the Mets

After a tumultuous offseason, Pete Alonso is back in his familiar spot at first base with the Mets. Contract negotiations didn’t go the way he had envisioned as a big, long-term contract eluded him, but he has a second bite at the apple this year to prove himself once again.

By all accounts, the Polar Bear had a down season last year. He hit .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs. Not counting the shortened 2020 season, that RBI total was the lowest of his career, and so was his .788 OPS. Concern was heightened down the stretch when the Mets were fighting for their playoff lives, as Alonso failed to step up.
