Pete Alonso breaks Mets single-season home run record

Pete Alonso made history on Tuesday night with his 42nd homer of the season, a new franchise record for the Mets.

The blast came on Yu Darvish’s first pitch of the bottom of the fourth, a 407-foot opposite field shot that gave the Mets a 1-0 lead over the Cubs at Citi Field.

He broke the mark shared by Carlos Beltran (2006) and Todd Hundley (1996). And Alonso did it with 31-plus games left to play in the regular season, one that has already seen plenty of home run records fall.

After Alonso crossed home plate, he saluted the fans and came out for a curtain call with Michael Conforto at the plate.
