In his upcoming book, Pedro Martinez accuses Jeff Wilpon, the Mets’ Chief Operating Officer, of forcing him to pitch while hurt in a meaningless September game in his first year with the club.
But the Mets say that’s not true, releasing a statement from Wilpon through a spokesman that reads: “Pedro was always a great competitor and deserving of being in the Hall of Fame.
“This particular excerpt in the book is false as those kinds of decisions have always been put in the hands of our baseball people.”
In his book “Pedro”, written with Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, Martinez said he had been shut down because of an injured toe, but Wilpon wanted him to pitch against Dontrelle Willis of the Marlins, a matchup with some sizzle.
