Noah Syndergaard Stymies Padres as Mets Gain in East

Through six perfect innings Tuesday night, Mets starter Noah Syndergaard remained stoic, apparently unaffected by the sudden tinge of the historic in this late July game.

Syndergaard had little reaction, too, when the San Diego Padres’ Will Venable finally singled up the middle on the first pitch of the seventh inning. And he remained calm when Yangervis Solarte followed with another single, a play on which Venable scooted to third as Ruben Tejada, trying to initiate a double play, errantly flipped the ball past Daniel Murphy.

After Matt Kemp weakly flied out to Murphy, Syndergaard finally unwound as he watched Tejada turn a double play — this time cleanly — to end the Padres’ lone scoring threat of the night against him.
