The Mets would have fired Terry Collins had they not won an Aug. 13 game against the Padres, a team source told Bergen Record columnist Bob Klapisch.
The Mets had lost 12 of 16 games, including a three-game sweep by the Diamondbacks ending with a 9-0 loss on Aug. 11 and the first game of a three-game series against the Padres at Citi Field on Aug. 12.
"Collins' job was saved incrementally, first by a victory on the 13th, then two more wins in three games," Klapisch writes. "The streak was modest, but it bought Collins enough breathing room to finally reverse the Mets' fortunes.
