Even with the arrival of Jose Bautista, Mickey Callaway said Brandon Nimmo will be the Mets’ regular leadoff hitter.
Following Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to the Marlins at Citi Field, Callaway said Bautista is expected to give occasional days off to the three everyday outfielders — Nimmo, Michael Conforto and Jay Bruce.
On Tuesday, the odd man out was Bruce, who pinch hit in the ninth to end the game.
Callaway stressed how much he likes Nimmo at the top of the lineup, despite his 0-for-3 night with a pair of strikeouts.
“I think we need him to be our consistent leadoff hitter at this point,’’ Callaway said.
