We've all heard the expression, "You had to be there."
Well, to appreciate what Nelson Doubleday meant to the Mets, you really had to be there.
And I don't mean when the Mets won the World Series in 1986, I mean Shea Stadium circa 1978-79. I was trying to think of a comparable sports franchise that's around today and I couldn't. The Mets were absolutely dreadful, the park was dead and their literally was no hope. And this was long before anyone could predict just how valuable these franchises could be.
