Morning Briefing: Thor, Verlander face off in opener in Detroit

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets and Detroit Tigers kick off an interleague series on Friday with a marquee matchup at Comerica Park.

Noah Syndergaard (9-5, 2.48 ERA) opposes reigning American League Pitcher of the Month Justin Verlander (11-6, 3.54) in the 7:10 p.m. ET opener.

The Mets’ last visit to Detroit was eventful. Back in June 2011, they scored a combined 30 runs in the opening two games of the series.

The first game included grand slams by Jason Bay and Carlos Beltran in consecutive innings, which ended a nearly two-year slam drought by the club.
