SAN FRANCISCO -- The New York Mets have returned to .500. And they have moved to within 4.5 games of the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild-card spot entering a showdown between the teams at Busch Stadium.
Before the teams square off, however, the Mets will get a day off to exhale in St. Louis. They also will be awaiting news from team doctors.
Steven Matz was due to take a redeye flight to New York on Sunday night and will have his balky shoulder examined on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
