WASHINGTON -- And now Logan Verrett stands between the New York Mets and a six-game deficit in the National League East.
Verrett gets the spot start opposite Max Scherzer on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET to provide Steven Matz with an extra day of rest.
General manager Sandy Alderson acknowledged on Tuesday that Matz has a bone spur in the back of his pitching elbow, which will need to be removed no later than this offseason. The Mets hope Matz can effectively pitch through discomfort. He will start on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field, with the Mets staying in order in a five-man rotation for now other than Verrett’s spot start.
