Major League Baseball has dropped its suspension against Dodgers infielder Chase Utley, who had received a two-game ban after his illegal ‘slide’ that resulted in Ruben Tejada‘s broken fibula during Game 2 of the NLDS last October.
The league’s explanation for overturning the suspension was that the rule in question is that there was ‘inconsistency’ with how the play had been called in the past.
Since Utley’s slide, the league has enacted stricter rules for slides at second base, but his slide was illegal then and remains illegal now.
