MLB commissioner: Jeurys Familia investigation ‘active’

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jeurys Familia’s alleged domestic incident followed a pattern in that it occurred in his offseason, just like Aroldis Chapman and Jose Reyes found domestic trouble last offseason.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred admitted Wednesday that such timing on this highly unfortunate issue provides him with leeway on whether and when discipline is imposed. It avoids both the terrible optics and the competitive advantage of an accused player helping his team. For now, Manfred said at the General Managers’ Meetings, the investigation on Familia is “active.”

“I think that it is usually difficult for us to complete our investigation before the criminal process has run its course,” Manfred said.
