Mike Piazza would welcome Mets retiring David Wright’s number

PORT ST. LUCIE — Mike Piazza is the only position player in Mets history with his number retired, but he expects to have company before long.

Asked Tuesday about the possibility of the team retiring David Wright’s No. 5, the Hall of Fame catcher indicated he is on board – though he doesn’t get a vote.

“There’s room up there for him, I am sure,” Piazza said upon arriving to spring training to serve as a guest instructor for the Mets. “I am glad I don’t make those decisions, but ask Jeff [Wilpon] that. What [Wright] means to the fans and the organization, but there’s good time.
