PORT ST. LUCIE — Mickey Callaway passed his first managerial exam with flying colors Friday while Dom Smith failed another Mets test.
The new Mets manager, who has preached accountability since the first day he was named skipper, practiced what he preached before he managed his first exhibition game when he benched the late-arriving Smith. Smith had been slated to be the starting first baseman, but was replaced by Peter Alonso.
Smith remade his body this winter and promised he would take a more professional approach. He was late for the 8:45 a.m. team meeting. Get with the program or take a seat.
