The first big firing of Brodie Van Wagenen’s tenure came on Thursday, as did a reaction from the general manager.
The Mets fired pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernandez. In their place, they brought in 82-year-old Phil Regan as pitching coach and brought back bullpen coach Ricky Bones. They also created a new position, pitching strategist, hiring Jeremy Accardo in that role.
Van Wagenen refused to take full responsibility for the decisions, instead calling it an organizational decision because the team has “the talent to be better than we have performed.
