Michael Cuddyer: ‘Toll on my body has caught up to me’

Michael Cuddyer officially announced his retirement Saturday morning, a day after word leaked of his plan to forego the final year of his contract with the Mets.

On The Players’ Tribune website, founded by former Yankees captain Derek Jeter, Cuddyer wrote, in part: “With one year left on my contract, it is especially difficult to imagine not suiting up in a Mets uniform for one more year. … But after 15 years, the toll on my body has finally caught up to me.”

Cuddyer was set to make $12.5 million with the Mets in 2016.
