The Cardinals, who lead the second Wild Card, are on pace for 85 wins. To top that and reach 86 wins, the Mets need to go 30-24 during the season's final 54 games. Unfortunately, the Mets are 41-44 since May 1, and 14-15 since July 1.

That said, regardless of essentially going sideways for more than three months, they're still just a game back of being in the postseason...

"We're very lucky to be where we are, and we've got to take advantage of it," Terry Collins said Thursday. "We're still in a pennant race, whether it's the Wild Card or anything else.
