The Mets paid recently-retired Michael Cuddyer a buyout worth between $2 million and $3 million, reports Mike Puma of the Post, citing an industry source (March 1).
Cuddyer, 36, was due to earn $12.5 million this season before announcing his retirement in December.
Mets GM Sandy Alderson told Puma that the Mets still would've been able to pursue OF Yoenis Cespedes had they not saved money due to Cuddyer's retirement, but noted that some of their other offseason moves might not have happened.
