ST. LOUIS — The Mets started the second half exactly how they spent most of the first half, struggling to score a run. After putting the tying run on third base with two outs in the ninth, the Mets bats came up short. John Mayberry, Jr. struck out as the Cardinals escaped with a 3-2 win over the Mets at Busch Stadium.
It was the 35th time this season the Mets’ struggling offense had scored just two runs or less in a game and this time it was dramatically costly.
