Amid a disappointing season, the Mets on Wednesday swung another trade of a veteran for young talent as they retool their roster with an eye toward 2018.
This time, the deal involved a large cash savings, the clearing of a roster spot, and their best power hitter, Jay Bruce, who was informed that he was being sent to the Cleveland Indians.
In exchange, the Mets received the low-level relief prospect Ryder Ryan, whose fastball was clocked in the mid-to-high 90s this year.
The Indians also assumed the remainder of Bruce’s $13 million salary this year, according to a person familiar with the deal who requested anonymity because the amounts of money involved in the deal had not been made public.
