WASHINGTON -- Pass the tissues. Having been swept by the Washington Nationals, the New York Mets are heading home a season-high-matching six games out of first place in the National League East.
Max Scherzer allowed two hits in 7 1/3 scoreless innings and Daniel Murphy homered twice as Washington beat the Mets, 4-2, Wednesday at Nationals Park.
After Wilmer Flores' two-run single in the third inning on Monday, the Mets (40-37) did not score until the final inning of the three-game series when James Loney produced a two-run homer.
