The Mets plan to retire David Wright’s No. 5 and induct him into the Mets Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Citi Field on July 19, according to reporting by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The ceremony will take place before the 4:10 p.m. ET game against the Reds. Wright is just the tenth player to have his number retired by the Mets and he is now the only Met besides Tom Seaver to be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame the same day as his number retirement.
Though once dubbed “not a superstar” by an owner who shall now no longer be named, Wright is unambiguously the best position player in franchise history, accruing almost 50 WAR over his 14-year career that was cut short due to spinal stenosis.
