The Mets signed first baseman Matt Adams to a minor league contract and invited him to major league spring training, the club announced Friday.
Adams, 31, batted .226/.276/.465 with 20 homers and 56 RBIs for the Nationals last season on the way to the franchise’s first World Series win. Washington chose not to exercise a mutual option to bring Adams back for the 2020 season.
Adams, who has played some outfield in his career, will likely be competing for a spot on the Mets bench. Reigning NL Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso will be the Mets starting first baseman and Dominic Smith is slotted behind him.
