Mets Surrender Season Highs in Runs and Hits in Blowout Loss to Brewers

MILWAUKEE — The Mets signed Jason Vargas, a veteran starting pitcher, to a two-year, $16 million contract before the season to help stabilize their oft-injured rotation. They also kept A.J. Ramos, an experienced relief pitcher who is owed $9.2 million this season, to strengthen the back of the bullpen.

Instead, both have done the opposite. It showed, again, in Saturday’s miserable loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in which the Mets did little right and allowed season highs in runs (17) and hits (19).

“Everybody has bad games,” Mets Manager Mickey Callaway said. “We had several that had bad games at the same time.
