Mets’ stunning reason for ignoring Bryce Harper: Jeff McNeil

The two biggest fish on the market can probably forget about Flushing Bay as a potential home.

As Bryce Harper and Manny Machado linger in free agency and look for teams willing to spend big on their services, the Mets entered this offseason with a plan, according to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, and neither mega-star was included or has entered it since.

“When we set out to build this team we wanted to identify what our needs were and that we could accomplish all of those needs as we went forward in the offseason,” Van Wagenen said Wednesday at Citi Field, where infielder Jed Lowrie was introduced, following his signing to a two-year contract worth $20 million.
