If Anthony Kay receives a promotion to the Mets this season, it likely will be in his natural role as a starting pitcher.
A day after the organization’s top pitching prospect was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse, assistant general manager Allard Baird on Tuesday indicated that even though the bullpen could serve as a way to reduce Kay’s innings and potentially help a Mets team that has a full rotation, the club probably won’t go that route.
“Our focus is to develop him as a major league starter,” Baird said before the Mets’ split a doubleheader with the Yankees in the Subway Series.
