Matt Allan entered the draft prepared for “crazy” things to happen and said that helped him cope with the anxiety of not getting selected earlier.
Considered a first-round talent who slipped to the third round because of concerns over whether he would sign, the right-handed pitcher from Seminole High School in Florida was introduced by the Mets on Friday. An industry source confirmed Allan will receive a $2.5 million signing bonus from the club, well above the $667,900 slot allotted for the No. 89 overall pick.
Allan, who is represented by Scott Boras, had committed to the University of Florida and reports surfaced before the draft he was seeking a signing bonus in the $4 million neighborhood.
