Mets’ starting pitching problem rears its head again

ST. LOUIS — Jacob deGrom reported good news Saturday on his sore elbow, but without him, the Mets’ starting pitching depth failed again.

Chris Flexen, called up from Triple-A Syracuse for the spot start with deGrom hitting the injured list, couldn’t make it through five innings as the Mets got tagged by the Cardinals in a 10-2 loss at Busch Stadium.

The 24-year-old Flexen, making his season debut, struggled through 4 ¹/u2083 innings — giving up six runs, five earned, on seven hits and four walks. He had struck out 18 in 12 innings at Syracuse this season but did not fan any Cardinals on Saturday.
