The Mets signed right-handed reliever Oliver Ortega to a minor league deal on Sunday, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi.
The 28-year-old Dominican righty initially signed with the Los Angeles Angels as an international free agent in 2015 before making his major league debut for the Angels on Sept 8, 2021. Ortega has pitched 58 innings over three MLB seasons, his first two with the Angels in 2021 and 2022—and most recently with the Minnesota Twins in 2023.
The Houston Astros picked Ortega up off waivers following the 2023 season, but he missed all of the 2024 season following surgeries to remove loose bodies and bone spurs from his pitching elbow.
