The Mets hope Luis Avilan will be an under-the-radar addition who subtracts the need for another left-hander in the bullpen.
Avilan agreed to a minor-league deal with the club on Thursday and was invited to spring training, where he will compete for a bullpen spot. As it stands, rookie Daniel Zamora is the Mets’ only other lefty relief option.
Avilan, 29, spent last season with the White Sox and Phillies, and went 2-1 with a 3.77 ERA in 70 appearances for the two teams. Lefties hit a feeble .220 against him.
“Luis is a left-handed quality major league reliever who addresses another offseason priority,” general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said in a statement.
