Mets sign Joe Panik to fill infield opening

The Mets have their Robinson Cano replacement.

After days of speculation and mutual interest, second baseman Joe Panik to the Mets is a done deal, according to The Post’s Mike Puma. The sides had to wait until he cleared waivers on Friday afternoon and for the Mets to clear a roster spot. It is unclear who the Mets are clearing off their 40-man roster to make room for Panik.

The Giants designated the 2015 All-Star for assignment earlier this week.

Panik, a New York native and St. John’s alum, has struggled this season, but there are hope he can turn it around in Queens and provide some extra depth in the wake of Cano’s potentially season-ending hamstring injury.
