Mets show glimpses of potential as Jacob deGrom continues to twirl gems

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets and New York Yankees entered Tuesday’s Subway Series matchup with won-loss records only one game apart.

That seemed hard to fathom given their different approaches at Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline, with the Mets adding Jay Bruce and Jonathon Niese and the Yankees shipping out Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova.

In a 7-1 win on Tuesday, the Mets (55-51) finally played the part of the team that's still competitive in 2016.

Jacob deGrom (7-5) contributed a scoreless effort for the third time in his past four starts and maligned Alejandro De Aza opened the scoring with a two-run homer against Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka in the victory.
